Tim Buckle

Psychological Skills Mentors

Tim Buckle is a Skills Mentor at Chimp Management. He has worked closely with Professor Steve Peters professionally and personally since 2001.

Tim is a former professional cyclist having represented Great Britain and England at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in the early 2000s. He spent 4 years as an athlete, competing at an international level and then transitioned into the Team GB coaching staff and cut his teeth as a regional development coach.

In this role, he developed a methodology that engaged and developed not only the young athletes physically but gave rise to a new way of thinking about cycling based around the importance of ‘playing the game’ and also placing a greater emphasis on the development of the person through their sport.

In this video, Tim talks about how his career in professional sport introduced him to Professor Steve Peters and The Chimp Model.

Through Tim’s work as an athlete and coach with British Cycling, he worked with Steve which helped him to gain insight into his own mind and to help others get the best out of themselves.

“Working at Chimp Management gives me a forum to talk about something I’m really passionate about. The Chimp Model has had an impact on me but I’ve also witnessed it have an impact on a range of people, from high-performing athletes to teenagers”

“I would like to thank your organization and Tim Buckle for the excellent workshop delivered to our staff and trainees.

Tim delivered to our group with a passion and understanding of our specific requirements. Multinational, multi-cultural, different ages, experiences and objectives were no issue and all participants took away a great
deal from the workshop.

The young athletes were engaged and keen to learn more, the coaches reflecting immediately on their role.”

Berlinda Tarling, UCI

 St James School

“Tim delivered a tailor made service to the school as requested. He worked with a class of children who were not at all phased at being observed by staff. One child with autism reported that he understood that he was ‘controlled differently by his chimp’. He is better able to cope in class as his teacher can use the analogy. Tim also delivered a workshop to all staff – building upon previous Chimp Management input.”

Angela Anderton, Headteacher, St James Church of England Junior School

“With stress being a major issue in the construction industry we wanted to focus our first Site Managers meeting of 2019 on wellbeing. It was such an insightful workshop for our team from a personal and a work perspective. Tim was able to weave in so many elements in the day from stress management, decision making and managing others (whether they’re young or old!). However, the way he was able to explain The Chimp Model in such a personal way enabled it to resonate with the team brilliantly. As a company we are now supporting our staff to continue with the model by attending the 2 day workshop in May.”

Rachel Vincent, Director, Vincent Stokes Ltd

“Tim made me understand how thoughts and feelings can hijack my mind and behaviour”

“Chimp session – it went into lovely detail about “chimp” as I’ve heard of it before”

“Tim Buckle gave me a few things to think about”

“Resonates with what I experience and trying to look at what more I need to do”

“Chimp session – outlined many things that I am already aware of but gave me a more proactive intention to deal with them”

“Inner chimp – makes sense now!”

“Tim Buckle – very helpful information very useful”

“Tim worked with us to develop a programme of support, based on the Chimp Model.  He explained the model to the group of affected students, and helped them to understand why they felt the way they did, and why they were experiencing particular feelings, and the actions that could stem from these.  This doesn’t really do justice to Tim and his impact on the group; his interaction with the group was expert, his ability to engage, inspire and shift thought patterns is outstanding, and his character and warmth really facilitated the student’s ability to start to process the impact of what had happened.  He also worked with our staff to introduce the chimp model and how it could support their work in the classroom and beyond, and this has helped all of our teachers and support staff to better understand how young people think and behave, and what we can do to help them, and to help themselves.”

Mr R Beeden, Assistant Principal, Hope Valley College

“If the prime aim of a speaker is grabbing a room’s attention from the word go then Tm achieved that in spades. Finding the perfect balance of energy and vibrancy with some real ‘get into your head’ thinking about the mind and people’s psychology, Tim was the perfect start for our conference. The ‘Chimp Paradox’ offers a thought-provoking but easy to understand approach and provides a reminder that looking after our own minds first is as crucial as trying to help others with theirs.”

Chris Holmes, Director, Northamptonshire Sport

“Tim’s passion for the subject and belief in the model is obvious. This shone through into his delivery, making it easy for attendees to grasp the mode and use to help themselves.” “His delivery is dynamic and fun, a really interactive session and super relevant to our sport but also to life in general.” “Tim had educated himself in delivering the chimp model to an audience with specific sport in mind which made it relevant and relatable”

British Showjumping Suffolk

“Thank you to Tim who delivered an excellent session as part of our Celebrating Youth Work Conference in November 2019. Delivering to a room full of young people, Youth Workers, and our partners in the communities of Leeds, he really brought the room alive with his utterly engaging style. There were many great comments from delegates, and the queue to speak to him at the end was a testament to that. You really confirmed the critical value of youth work. We have some incredibly passionate and talented professionals in Leeds. Your session articulated so well the neuroscience behind what they do, why it works, and how to improve it even further to support the personal and social development of our city’s young people.”

Leeds City Council

Tim’s delivery of the Chimp material was professional, relevant and carried out with great ease. He connected so well with the younger audience he was working with, and the workshop complemented the strategies of Scottish Cycling.

Gary Coltman, Head of Sport

Tim Buckle is a highly-engaging public speaker, having worked in performing arts earlier in his career, he is able to captivate his audience whilst delivering thought-provoking insights into the human mind.

He has worked with Professor Steve Peters for over 18 years and is an expert on The Chimp Model and its practical application.

Tim is passionate about helping young people. He delivers workshops at schools, youth events and colleges.

“I really enjoy supporting young people and helping them gain insight into why their thoughts, emotions and behaviours may be unhelpful to themselves and other people. Working with parents, teachers and coaches, I can also help them to better understand the mind of young people, thereby increasing the chances of successful relationships and improved psychological well-being.”

Chimp Management is a charity supporting company, you can find out more about this here. We encourage everyone in our team to support charities, either through donations or voluntary work.

Tim works closely with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and Ride for Charlie.

CRY is a charity that aims to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families.

Ride for Charlie is a not for profit company that helps support young off-road cyclists. It was set up by Nick and Sarah in memory of their son Charlie Craig.

Tim’s work for Ride for Charlie involves him raising awareness for CRY, by sharing first-hand stories of sudden cardiac death and the impact it has on family, friends and the wider community. By doing this, he is able to help educate people with a view to strengthening their knowledge; helping to manage and prevent potentially fatal cardiac disorders.
